Y’all Means All, The Power of Inclusivity to Strengthen Arts Organizations

Sahid Pabon is the Director of Entertainment at Central Florida Vocal Arts (CFVA), a vibrant organization that emphasizes inclusivity, accessibility, and professional opportunities for performers in the arts. With over 14 years of experience as a performer, Sahid has now dedicated his career to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) both on and off stage. In this conversation, he shares insights on how DEI initiatives can transform arts nonprofits and how his organization is leading the charge with programs like Belles and Beaux.

Sahid’s Background as a Performer

A Passion for the Stage and Screen

Sahid’s career as a performer spans 14 years, with notable highlights including world premieres in South Florida, voiceover work for Gintama on Hulu, and voicing the character Nate for the Yokai Watch series in South Africa and South Asia. He has also contributed to theme park productions, such as Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration and originating the role of Dillon Dreamboat at SeaWorld Orlando’s production of Surf Holiday.

Motivation for DEI and Community Engagement

Driving Change Through the Arts

Sahid’s interest in DEI was deeply influenced by his work with Central Florida Vocal Arts, which strives to make the arts accessible to all while providing professional performers with opportunities to inspire their communities. His passion for DEI comes from the belief that supporting performers and making the arts accessible helps foster a stronger, more inclusive community.

Impact of DEI on Arts Nonprofits

Visibility, Engagement, and Cultural Relevance

Sahid identifies several key ways DEI initiatives can enhance nonprofit arts organizations:

1. Increased Visibility: A diverse workforce leads to new experiences and creative innovations.

2. Improved Audience Engagement: A diverse staff allows nonprofits to connect with a broader range of audiences, fostering stronger community relationships.

3. Enhanced Cultural Relevance: Inclusive programming ensures that all cultural backgrounds are reflected in nonprofit offerings.

4. Inclusive Leadership: This builds positive work environments, enhances morale, and strengthens community connections.

5. Accessibility: By ensuring programs are accessible to people with disabilities, nonprofits can expand their audience reach and improve community engagement.

Understanding DEI

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Explained

DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In simple terms, it means creating environments where everyone, regardless of identity or background, is included and valued. DEI is about providing a seat at the table for all and ensuring visibility and representation for everyone.

Addressing Misconceptions about DEI

DEI as a Positive Force for Unity

For those who may view DEI negatively, Sahid emphasizes that it’s about visibility, inclusion, and community. DEI initiatives are not about diminishing anyone’s position; they are about ensuring everyone is seen, heard, and respected. By fostering unity, DEI strengthens communities rather than dividing them.

Belles and Beaux: Revamping an Iconic Group

Sahid played a pivotal role in transforming Belles and Bows, a previously all-female-identifying vocal group, into an inclusive ensemble—Belles and Beaux. This new version includes soprano, alto, tenor, bass, and vocal percussion, showcasing performers from a variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences. The transformation reflects CFVA’s broader commitment to inclusion and providing equal opportunities for talented performers in Central Florida.

Effective Strategies for Fostering Inclusivity

Language, Leadership, and Listening

Key strategies for promoting inclusivity in arts programming include:

Inclusive Language: Reduces barriers and fosters belonging.

Diverse Thinking: Encourages creativity and reflects the community.

Inclusive Leadership: Ensures respect and value for all members of the team.

Listening to Performers and Employees: Gathers valuable insights that shape inclusive programming and decision-making.

By implementing these strategies, organizations can create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for performers, audiences, and staff alike.

Engaging Underrepresented Communities

To engage underrepresented communities, Sahid suggests offering opportunities for them to experience the arts firsthand. When individuals from these communities have access to arts programming, they can better connect with the nonprofit’s mission and feel empowered to participate.

Staying Informed on DEI Best Practices

Continuous Learning and Community Engagement

Sahid advises staying connected with unions such as the Actors’ Equity Association and The Dramatists Guild, which publish resources on DEI in the performing arts. Attending conferences like the Latinx Theater Commons and Black Theatre Festival, as well as engaging with the local community, are other ways to stay informed about best practices and emerging trends.
